Simple Machines - Wheel and Axle
Messy Lightning Bolt by Carlina, Finley, Sam, and Ava
We used paper, cardboard, masking tape, water bottles and other stuff. It was fun building Messy Lightning Bolt. At first, we didn't want a name. Then, when we were finished coloring, we found out that we should name it, Messy Lightning Bolt. While we were building our car, we made a few little changes until we finally made it work. It was hard making the wheel and axle because we didn't know what to do. It turned out easy because we had four people: Carlina, Finley, Sam, and Ava. At first we didn't work so well together, but in the end, we did.
Bottle Buddies by Isabella, Julie, AbigailJoan, and Julie
Our team, the Bottle Buddies created a fully functional car out of recycled materials. Here's how...our car is named BOB (Bottle Operated Bus). Our original idea was to use the following materials: bottle, snap cap, metal candle frames, pencils, toilet paper tubes, CD's, yogurt cups, and papers.
We put a bottle onto the snap caps for the base. We used CD's, candle frames, and pencils as the wheel and axle. We used the paper tubes for casing of the axle. The original idea was to put water in the bottle, which we thought would make it go faster. Isabella said, "Yes, it would go faster, but not further." She was correct. The license plate is made of a salted caramel pudding recipe. And that was how our car was born!
The Bomb by Eli, Milo, Kaden, and Colin
Our car took two days. We tried three times and each time it fell apart. Finally, we used two toilet paper rolls, milk carton, a straw, cardboard wheels, four caps, and pencils. We taped the two toilet paper rolls to the bottom of the milk carton. Then, we hot glued the caps to the pencils. We stuck it through the toilet rolls and hot glued the other cap. Then, we made a second axle. Last, we hot glued the cardboard wheels to the caps. To make the flag, we taped the flag to a straw and taped it to the car.
In the beginning, Eli took over making the wheel and axle. Milo did not really do anything because he didn't like the sound of the ripping tape. We were ok with that. We worked better in the end.
Star Fire 2,000 by Lisandra, Naomi, Mackenzie, and Nanami
We made our car out of a rice milk carton, two straws, four cardboard wheels, and a cardboard rectangle for the license plate.
Our first trouble was our wheel size. They were either too big or too small. Our second problem was finding a perfect axle. We got straws from the other group and Mrs. Denny helped us with making cardboard wheels and hot gluing them onto the axle. The last part was the body. We used a rice milk container. It worked perfectly.
Flame Racer by Holly, Alana, Alexa, and Sophie
We made a colorful car using a gumball machine box, fruit lids, masking tape, two pencils, wooden wheels, and a bottle. In the beginning, we made a few mistakes. The bumper fell off, the wheels were bent, and the pencils kept falling off the box. We fixed the problems by putting more tape on. The wheels could not be fixed. They were too big and couldn't fit on the car. At first, everyone was scared, but then Alexa brought in a wheel and axle the next day. Alana brought in a big box for the body. Holly brought in a little box. The big box could not fit on the wheel and axle, so we used Holly's box. Finally, the Flame Racer was born!!
